41st Annual New York Regional Graduate Mathematics Conference

This year’s 41st Annual New York Regional Graduate Mathematics Conference at Syracuse University will be held on Saturday April 9th, 2016. Our confirmed keynote speakers include Steven Zelditch (Northwestern University) and Jeffery Weeks. The Syracuse Graduate Mathematics Conference is run entirely by graduate students and is generously supported by the American Mathematical Society.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Steven Zelditch

Dr. Zelditch received his bachelors degree from Harvard University and went on to complete his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley under Dr. David Weinstein with thesis Reconstruction of Singularities for Solutions of Schrödinger’s Equations. Dr. Zeldtich’s research centers around problems in asymptotics of eigenfunctions/eigenvalues on Riemannian manifolds, statistical algebraic geometry, asymptotics in Kähler geometry (Bergman kernel approximations), and problems in mathematical physics including quantum chaos and String/M-Theory.

Dr. Zelditch completed a post doc at Columbia University. He has served as a professor at a variety of universities including Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, MIT, MRSI. In 2002, he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing. While in 2013, he and Xiaojun Huang were awarded the Stefan Bergman Prize. Dr. Zelditch serves as a co-editor of a variety of journals and has had 9 doctoral students.

Dr. Jeffrey Weeks

Dr. Jeffrey Weeks received his bachelors at Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. from Princeton University under the late Dr. William Thurston. He has held faculty appointments at Princeton University, Stockton State College, Middlebury College, and Ithaca College. However, much of Dr. Week’s mathematical career has been spent as a free-lance mathematician.

Dr. Weeks has written a variety of computer programs to assist in mathematical research and visualization. While his SnapPea program is used to study hyperbolic 3-manifolds, he has created a variety of interactive programs to introduce these concepts to people of all ages. Dr. Weeks has received a variety of research grants including grants from the Geometry Center, Brigham Young University, The Finnish Science Center, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Weeks was a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant in 1999 and in 2007 he won the Levi L. Conant Prize for his paper, The Poincaré Dodecahedral Space and the Mystery of the Missing Fluctuations. Moreover, his book The Shape of Space is an accessible introduction to topological analysis and received high honors from the International Congress of Mathematicians.
